World Mitochondrial Disease Week (WMDW) 2024

From September 16th to the 22nd, 2024, the global mitochondrial disease community united to raise awareness for those living with mitochondrial disease.

We had a number of activities planned to support the Canadian mitochondrial community and contribute to global awareness efforts. Take a look below!

Throughout September, and during WMDW, Canadians nationwide used their energy to participate in Walk N’ Roll 4 Mito. Founded by MitoChampion Louise Gibson in 2015 in Mississauga, Ontario, this event has now spread across Canada, uniting teams from various regions to walk with a common vision to create a world where all lives are powered by healthy mitochondria!

On September 21st, 2024, the Victoria team hosted Hazel’s Light Up for Mito Walk. The walk traveled through downtown Victoria and admired buildings lit up green, then ended at the BC Legislature where the ceremonial entrance alcove and fountains were lit green.

On September 22nd, 2024, Edmonton, Alberta hosted Disability Pride presented by Queer and Disabled Drag Shows. This drag show featured Ryder (ryden on wheelz) who was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease in August 2023. Funds raised supported MitoCanada and Ehlers Danlos Society.

On September 21st, 2024, landmarks around the world lit up in bright green to celebrate WMDW and raise awareness for those living with mito.

Leading up to WMDW, MitoCanada encouraged municipalities across Canada to proclaim September 16th to 22nd as Mitochondrial Disease Week. These proclamations highlight the importance of awareness and community support for Canadians living with mito.
