2024 MitoScholars Helping young adults living with mitochondrial disease pursue their academic dreams
Veronica Jenkins | Calgary, Alberta | Bachelor of Design (first year), Alberta University of the Arts
Veronica Jenkins is an aspiring artist and mito sister who is pursuing a design degree at the Alberta University of the Arts. She shares that her goal is to “gain skills to improve my art so that I can create a series of pieces that will demonstrate the challenges that people with disabilities face in today’s society.”
Living with a younger sister who has mitochondrial disease has impacted her life in such a profound way. Veronica has learned skills such as how to administer tube feeds, properly transfer people to and from mobility devices, and life with mitochondrial disease has introduced Veronica to an incredible network of people and organizations that connect families of kids with special needs. Veronica’s sister has taught her how to be patient, how to care, how to laugh and create and, most importantly, how to love unconditionally.
Veronica shares,
“My sister is my best friend, and I really don’t know where I’d be today if it weren’t for her and her constant support. I am honoured to have been selected as a scholarship recipient; thank you so much.” Veronica continues, “I am excited to begin my university journey and thank you deeply for making it a reality. MitoCanada has helped so many people achieve their goals, and I am forever grateful that they’re willing to help me achieve mine. Once again, thank you so much.”
