World Mitochondrial Disease Week (WMDW) 2025

From September 15th to the 21st, 2025, the global mitochondrial disease community united to raise awareness for those living with mitochondrial disease.

We had a number of activities planned to support the Canadian mitochondrial community and contribute to international awareness efforts. Take a look below!

Throughout September, and especially during World Mitochondrial Disease Week (September 15–21, 2025), Canadians from coast to coast came together to use their energy to participate in Walk N’ Roll 4 Mito. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the event, which began in 2015 thanks to MitoChampion Louise Gibson in Mississauga, Ontario. Since then, it has grown into a powerful, nationwide movement. Thank you to our team’s in Mississauga and Winnipeg that were part of this milestone and helped us celebrate a decade of community, determination, and energy!

Thank you to all the Vancouver Island families and supporters living with mitochondrial disease for joining the 3rd annual Hazel’s Light Up for Mito Walk on Saturday, September 2oth, 2025! Hazel took the crew on a stroll through downtown Victoria, taking in the 15 heritage buildings and local businesses glowing green, with the walk ending at the BC Legislature, where the ceremonial entrance alcove and fountains were lit in vibrant green in support of mitochondrial disease awareness.

On September 20th, 2025, we had a record-breaking 70+ Canadian locations lit up in bright green to celebrate WMDW and raise awareness for those living with mito.

In the lead-up to WMDW, MitoCanada garnered 21 municipalities/provinces across Canada to proclaim September 15th to 21st as Mitochondrial Disease Week. These proclamations highlight the importance of awareness and community support for Canadians living with mito.
