MitoCanada and MITO2i are proud to co-host the MITO2026 International Conference, taking place November 30 and December 1, 2026, at the Ottawa Marriott Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario.

This international conference will bring together patients, families, caregivers, researchers, clinicians, trainees, advocates, community organizations, and industry partners to explore advances in mitochondrial science and medicine.

Over two days, MITO2026 will create opportunities for scientific exchange, patient and family education, community connection, and meaningful conversations about where mitochondrial research and care are headed next.

Patient & Family Education – November 30

As part of MITO2026, MitoCanada will host a dedicated one-day patient and famly education program on November 30 focused solely on primary mitochondrial disease.

The program has been shaped by topics identified as important by the mitochondrial disease community and will focus on practical information, emerging research, and questions that matter to patients and caregivers.

Sessions will include:

• Drug Repurposing and Clinical Trials: How existing drugs may be explored as potential treatments for primary mitochondrial disease and what patients should understand about the clinical trial process.
• Preparing for ER Visits: What information, tools, and care plans can help emergency department teams understand and respond to the needs of someone living with primary mitochondrial disease.
• Dystonia and Mito: How dystonia can present in primary mitochondrial disease, how it is assessed, and treatment and management approaches that may help.
• Ask the Expert Panel: An opportunity for patients and caregivers to ask questions directly to clinicians with expertise in primary mitochondrial disease.

Patients and families will also have access to keynote research sessions exploring mitochondrial drug discovery using brain models and precision neurology, including therapeutic targets and the importance of timing.

Exploring the Science of Mitochondria

Mitochondria are increasingly being studied across many areas of health and disease. The broader MITO2026 scientific program will explore how mitochondrial biology and dysfunction are contributing to our understanding of disease and the development of new approaches to treatment.

Day 2 will be primarily research-focused, with presentations exploring topics including mitochondrial dysfunction in mood disorders, energy disturbances in bipolar disorder, metabolic psychiatry, and other emerging areas of mitochondrial science.

Across the conference, keynote lectures, scientific presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities will help foster collaboration among academia, healthcare, industry, and the patient community.
