Be Part of MitoRevolution
MitoRevolution is one of the largest investments in mitochondrial research in Canada, bringing together leading researchers, clinicians, and patient partners to explore a bold new area of medicine: mitochondrial transplantation.
As this research moves forward, the voices, questions, and experiences of the community are essential.

What is MitoRevolution?
A Transformational Canadian Research Initiative
MitoRevolution is a $23.8 million national research initiative funded through the New Frontiers in Research Fund Transformation (NFRF-T). Led by Dr. Ana Andreazza and the MITO2i team at the University of Toronto, the project brings together an interdisciplinary team across Canada to explore how mitochondrial transplantation could be applied in real-world care.
MitoCanada is a partner in this initiative, ensuring that mitochondrial disease patient and community voices are meaningfully integrated throughout the research process.
What is Mitochondrial Transplantation?
An Emerging Area of Research
Mitochondrial transplantation is an experimental approach that involves introducing healthy mitochondria, the parts of our cells responsible for producing energy, into cells that are not functioning properly.
Researchers are exploring whether this approach could help restore energy production at the cellular level.
This area of research is still in the early stages, particularly for primary mitochondrial disease. While early studies in other conditions have shown promise, more research is needed to better understand:

Why Community Involvement Matters
Because this research is still evolving, it’s critical that it reflects the real priorities, questions, and concerns of the people it aims to impact.
By sharing your voice, whether through a quick survey or deeper engagement, you are helping ensure that future therapies are informed, responsible, and aligned with the needs of the community.
How You Can Contribute to the Research
There are a number of ways you can share your voice and perspective on mitochondrial transplantation research. You can take our micro surveys on mitochondrial transplantation and/or sign up for patient engagement in research opportunities.
