MitoRevolution: Advancing Mitochondrial Transplantation with Patient Voices at the Core
MitoCanada is proud to be a leading partner in MitoRevolution, a groundbreaking, $23.8 million research initiative supported by the New Frontiers in Research Fund – Transformation (NFRF-T) grant. This landmark project, led by Dr. Ana Andreazza and the MITO2i team at the University of Toronto, marks a bold step forward in regenerative medicine.
About the Project: MitoRevolution
MitoRevolution: Mitochondrial Transplantation Transforming Regenerative Medicine — from research to patient care to global impact aims to explore an innovative therapeutic approach: transplanting healthy mitochondria into damaged cells. This technique holds potential to revolutionize treatment for:
- Organ failure
- Chronic inflammation
- Neurodegenerative and degenerative diseases
By restoring energy production at the cellular level, mitochondrial transplantation offers hope where conventional medicine often falls short.
MitoCanada’s Role: Centering the Patient Voice
Since 2017, MitoCanada has worked closely with Dr. Andreazza and the MITO2i team to ensure that patient and community perspectives are embedded in every stage of this transformative work — from lab bench to bedside.
As one of the organizations leading the Patient and Community Engagement initiative of the MitoRevolution project, MitoCanada will:
- Champion the integration of patient experience in research
- Collaborate on ethical, inclusive, and culturally informed models of care, including Indigenous health frameworks
- Help design and share educational tools to increase awareness and understanding of mitochondrial transplantation
- Foster dialogue between patients, caregivers, researchers, and clinicians to ensure that emerging therapies reflect real-world needs and priorities
A Bold Vision for Regenerative Medicine
MitoRevolution unites an exceptional interdisciplinary team from across Canada, including experts in:
- AI-powered delivery systems
- Organ-on-a-chip testing platforms
- Clinical trial design across multiple organ systems
- Equity, access, and community integration
Together, we are working toward a future where cellular repair and regeneration become standard care, and where mitochondrial transplantation can improve lives on a global scale.
“We believe mitochondrial transplantation will reshape the landscape of regenerative medicine,” says Dr. Andreazza. “This isn’t about managing disease. It’s about restoring life at its most fundamental level — and ensuring that this breakthrough reaches everyone.”
“We’re embarking on an exciting and potentially transformational journey — one where, for the first time, researchers and the patient community are walking side by side. While there’s still much to learn, the possibility of rescuing or restoring cellular energy offers real hope. This work could change not only how we treat disease, but how we understand what’s possible for people living with mitochondrial and energy-related conditions.”
