Kate Murray, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Kate Murray leads MitoCanada with heart, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the community. A longtime advocate and changemaker, Kate believes that by uniting lived experiences and voices, we can break down barriers, improve health outcomes, and co-create solutions that spark lasting change.
Her journey with MitoCanada began long before she became CEO. As a former Director of Program Development and interim CEO, Kate has been a driving force behind many of the organization’s most impactful initiatives. Inspired by her own experience as a caregiver to a child diagnosed with a complex chronic illness, Kate transitioned from a successful career in the for-profit sector to dedicate herself fully to nonprofit work.
She brings extensive experience leading patient-focused programs and advocacy efforts, having founded the children’s charity Robbie’s Rainbow, co-founded Dynamic Focus, and held leadership roles with the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation. Kate is a sought-after voice on patient engagement, serving on national steering committees and advisory networks, including the NEOPICS Cohort Study, the Family Advisory Network at SickKids, and the Roche Co-Creation Council.
At her core, Kate is a community builder—someone who brings people together to make a difference. Whether she’s guiding strategic growth or supporting families facing the uncertainty of mitochondrial disease, her passion is grounded in empathy, lived experience, and a deep desire to create a better future.
Outside of work, Kate finds balance and joy in nature—on a beach walk, trail run, or kayak adventure. She’s also a proud mom of two young adults and a teenager, and will happily tell you her greatest joy (and wildest ride) is motherhood.

Meet our 2025 Summer Interns!
Somia Zafeer, Digital Marketing Coordinator
I’m excited to join MitoCanada through the Government of Canada Summer Jobs Program. My journey in the nonprofit sector began with Regenesis, a student-led environmental organization, where I gained hands-on experience in outreach, volunteer coordination, and community engagement. That experience sparked my passion for using communications and digital media to drive meaningful change.
Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a range of organizations, where I’ve honed my skills in marketing, content creation, graphic design, and social media strategy. At MitoCanada, I’m looking forward to supporting impactful awareness campaigns, amplifying community voices, and contributing to the organization’s mission in a meaningful way. I’m passionate about storytelling and excited to be part of a team dedicated to making a difference.
Fatima Ali, Events Coordinator
I am thrilled to work as an Events Coordinator for MitoCanada, applying my skills to contribute to the organization’s goal of supporting individuals living with mitochondrial disease.
As a Social Sciences student at McMaster University, I have always been passionate about outreaching and educating people. My involvement in the community has helped me develop an extensive background in community engagement, research and event management.
I believe events are an engaging way to develop a sense of community for all, especially for those who feel that their voices are unheard. I, at MitoCanada, am determined to establish the same for those living with mitochondrial disease and its researchers through my consistent efforts!
