On ne sait pas encore exactement pourquoi les mitochondries sont si mobiles. Certaines \u00e9tudes ont laiss\u00e9 entendre que les cellules font don de leurs mitochondries \u00e0 leurs voisines en cas de besoin. Au cours des trois derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, la recherche a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que les mitochondries sont bien plus que des centrales cellulaires qui transforment les nutriments des aliments en \u00e9nergie.
